About Gabriela Los Angeles

GABRIELA is a grassroots-based alliance of more than 200 women’s organizations, institutions, desks, and programs of women all over the Philippines and abroad seeking to wage a struggle for the liberation of all oppressed Filipino women and the rest of our people. We seek to connect our current conditions as Filipina students, mothers, professionals, and wage-workers in the United States to that of our motherland through cultural expression, education, and political action. We are committed to working for genuine liberation and democracy through advancing the National Democratic movement of the Philippines.



It was founded in the Philippines in 1984 and named after Gabriela Silang, the first Filipino woman to lead a revolt against the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. GABRIELA USA is the first overseas chapter of GABRIELA (in the Philippines) including members in Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, San Francisco, and Washington DC.



While we take collective action and vigorously campaign on women-specific issues such as women’s rights, gender discrimination, violence against women and women’s health and reproductive rights, GABRIELA is also at the forefront of national and international economic and political issues that affect women.
