About Bagong Kulturang Pinoy

Bagong Kulturang Pinoy (BKP) is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization based in Bedford, MA, dedicated to developing reading culture and promoting literacy in underserved communities across the Philippines. Operating from their Danvers warehouse, BKP implements comprehensive reading programs designed to provide children in impoverished areas with access to quality books and evidence-based literacy instruction. The organization establishes and maintains libraries in schools and community centers, making educational resources accessible where they are needed most. BKP's educational approach combines two proven methodologies: the First Steps to Engaged Reading (FSER) program, developed by Rotary International for pre-K through grade 3 students, and the Thinking While Reading (TWR) program for grade 4 and older students. Both programs are designed to cultivate active reading engagement and foster proficiency in English language skills. BKP has trained nearly 2,500 teachers and volunteers in these evidence-based instructional techniques. The organization's impact is substantial, having served over 400 communities, opened more than 500 libraries, and distributed close to 800,000 books throughout the Philippines. BKP's achievements have earned recognition from the Philippine Department of Education as an Educational Stakeholder and received the prestigious Philippine Presidential Banaag Award for its invaluable contribution to literacy. Through monthly book packing sessions and annual balikbayan box initiatives, BKP continues to expand its reach and transform educational opportunities for hundreds of thousands of children in poverty-stricken regions.
